Vale Clydach Refinery located near Swansea in South Wales, is one of Europe’s largest nickel refineries, producing high purity nickel pellet and powder products for specialist applications such as high nickel alloys, batteries, nickel plating and automotive components. We supply over 280 customers in over 30 countries worldwide (Europe, Asia and USA). Our Continuous Improvement (CI) approach has been based around cultural transformation and specific tools: Standard Work, 5S, TPM, OEE, QCO and Six Sigma.

We have been on a CI & Operational Excellence journey since 2008 and are proud of our achievements. Our employees have been trained in CI tools such as problem solving and are encouraged to apply this learning in their work team. Key to our success has been engaging with all employees to contribute improvement ideas and participate in their implementation. The visit will be an opportunity for us to share these experiences and what we have learnt along the way, through to being awarded the Welsh Business Award for Innovation/Improvement in Practices and the Shingo Silver medallion for Operational Excellence in January 2014.

We will share the process with you and during a tour of the Refinery you will have the opportunity to see how CI has been implemented in practice and ask questions to staff members at all levels of the organisation.

Mae Purfa Vale Clydach ger Abertawe yn ne Cymru yn un o burfeydd nicel mwyaf Ewrop sy’n cynhyrchu peledi nicel a chynnyrch powdr pur gaiff eu defnyddio’n arbenigol, er enghraifft, fel aloiau nicel, batris, platiau nicel a darnau ceir. Rydym ni’n cyflenwi cynnyrch i dros 280 o gwsmeriaid mewn dros 30 o wledydd ledled y byd (Ewrop, Asia a’r UDA). This IWI visit will deliver powerful insight into customer excellence through innovation and offer a window into the IPOs stated aims to assist UK businesses leverage their intellectual property to improve their international competitiveness and also protect their most critical asset. IPO is constantly improving its services to organisations and has embraced strong continuous improvement goals.

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is the official UK government body responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights including patents, designs, trade marks and copyright.

The Patent Office was set up in 1852 to grant patents, although the origins of the patent system date back a further 400 years.

We’re now a team of over 1,000, with our main offices in Newport. The team is made up of specialists in rights-granting, IT, finance and HR. In addition, we also hold Investor in People and Customer Excellence awards for our training and development of staff and commitment to customer service respectively, as well as a TW3 award for our Adaptive ways of working.

Cultural change in an organisation of well over 1,000 people doing very different jobs can be challenging, and you have to be in it for the long haul! Join us to hear about the ups and downs on the journey to becoming an innovative and empowered organisation whose people and customers are at the heart of change.

Description:Warwick Chemicals’ site at Mostyn produces a small but vital part of powder detergents that are sold by large multinationals such as Procter and Gamble. Dealing with multinationals demands the highest standards of service and a willingness to work closely with the customer at multiple levels in the organisation from operations and quality to R and D and sales.

On the half day visit to the site, Warwick will share some of the ways that they meet the needs of this demanding group of customers profitably.

This strategy enabled them to win a Supplier Excellence award from Procter and Gamble in 2016 - something that only 31 other companies achieved out of their global supplier base of over 50,000 companies!

The visit will include a site tour and a buffet lunch where you will be able to ask questions to members of the Warwick team.
